Thanks for the update! I have been in touch with the ebay seller tonight (naive-buyer), and his units are all the higher range versions, which he will be sending me some to troubleshoot with some Canon 580's.

From the previous work you all have done, I am guessing some of this has to do with changing the diode values or output polarities to match specifically what happens with the Canon flash trigger circuits. This might be a case where the changes to the optical slave needs to be brand or model specific of the flash.

I'll post if I can make any progress in this regard.

The led and 220 ohm(?) resisors are in series in the sync cable, so not parallel 'over' the sync? That would lower the sync current, right? Also, what direction is the led?

The ground side is just straight through, the hot side of the sync circuit goes like this:

flash <---resistor <--- ( + LED - ) <--- optical slave

I have used resistors between 220 ohm to 1K, it depends on which LED I use.
