This is a night of firsts for me: first time seeing MONO, first time shooting a concert, and first time using second curtain sync.

This was my favorite shot of the night, but I was too absorbed in the concert to remember to focus...I'm really disappointed that it isn't in focus. It would have made a great photo.

This one is nice because it shows action.

I took several more, but these are my favorites. I just ordered a nifty fifty this afternoon, so next time I'll have better pictures to share.

I had an idea to spend most of the exposure zoomed out and then zoom in right before the flash. I like how it turned out.

i shot MONO last w eek, for the 2nd time. good band.

i would not hold out for the 50 f/1.4 if you can scrape together $75 and get the f/1.8 version now. spend a bit more time w/ yr flash, too, and check the histogram. even w/ flash these are very dark, and could benefit from a longer exposure time, higher ISO, and/or higher FEC.

the last one's a bit strange w/ the 'baby alien bassist' coming out of the larger one.

Haha...baby alien bassist! Sounds like a good name for a band!

I think I misunderstood the name of the nifty fifty. I was under the impression it was the 1.8, but apparently it's the 1.4 - I was not aware of that.

I think you're right about underexposure. I was just kind of concerned about annoying the band with a super-strong flash, so I dialed it down a bit. Now that you mention it though, it probably wouldn't be a big deal.

The Nifty Fifty is the f/1.8 and is about $75 and is by far the best value in Canon lenses. The f/1.4 is about $375 (I haven't checked in a while) I think. The f/1.8 does a damn good job for a little piece of plastic.

That's good to hear. I'm really excited about getting it because I hate ruining the atmosphere with flash. In such an environment where a tripod is not really an option and a monopod is likely to get bumped, it will be nice to get adequate lighting without the intrusive and often blinding flash.

B&H in Manhattan had some used 50mm 1.8's for sale at around $50 bucks... check it out...and immediately start saving for the next lens... I'd target the $375 price range of a prime lens like the 50mm 1.4 (for even darker venues), 85mm 1.8 for greater distance reach...

Save, save, save and buy the best, once...The results will be fantastic...

Good advice, no matter what hobby...

that said, if you don't have the $350 now, i'd get the $75 lens..i used my thrifty fifty for a few months before i upgraded, and only lost ~$15 or so on it...check my site; the 1st set of MONO photos was taken w/ that lens.
