well, one someone gets a bad copy, bad press is usually the consequence

and people tend to not come and talk about how they got a good copy...but they do come when they think they have a bad copy.

That is why it is hard to go by user reviews...many times the happy people do not go around looking for places to tell the world about it.

I had a 24-70 L about 2 months ago.
The copy was horriblely soft and OOF.
I loved the focal length though.

This might be an impossible question, but on your experiences,
What are the chances of me getting a TACK SHARP copy of the 24-70?
I know there are so many BAD copies floating around.
I cannot settle for anything less.
I WANT this lens badly.

That said, I will be getting rid of my 35L (which is a gem BTW).
I don't have a need for a prime like this.

50-50....you'll either get a sharp copy or you won't :D.

There was a period when there were very regular complaints and now they seem to have dried up, so I suspect Canon fixed whatever the problem was that caused inconsistency across copies.

A few other lenses suffer similar inconsistency: Sigma 30mm 1.4 and 100-400 IS L are two that come to mind. You just have to read this forum regularly over a couple of years to note the consistency in reported inconsistency ;-)a

I have never owned a zoom that was as sharp wide open as stopped down. The closest has been my 70-200mm IS L 4.0. So, when you test expect the 24-70 to perform well at 4.0 and a tad less well wide open. This based on using three copies and owning one. This was pretty consistent across three copies. One I tried 18 months or so ago was actually pretty poor and I think was faulty.

Like any slightly dodgy lens bought new I would just get it fixed if you have a problem because then you are sorted.

The chances of you getting a GOOD copy are far greater than those of getting a BAD copy. If yours was bad, you should have had it calibrated by Canon.

I know mine isn't TACK SHARP at f/2.8, but it's a zoom. By f/4 it's almost a pin, and by f/5.6 it can cut me if I'm not careful. Anything to the contrary is user error. ;)

Mine gives me the same result ... a bit soft until f/4.

Hi there,
I just got mine from B&H too and it travelled half way round the world with UPS in one piece. The Canon box itself is actually squarer at the corners than my other lens bought from a local dealer.( B&H and UPS must be listening) Shipping was rather slow as expected from the multiple holidays. Had a quick test and so far so good. Will do some more shooting later.May I ask what is your date on the lens? Mine is UV07, reason asking being my local dealer selling as new as UV10. Thinking that B&H has such a high volume sale I 'd thought it'd be fresh from factory. No I am not paranoid that it is a return, It's be faster for me to sent it to our nearest Canon but was just wondering? Thanks

From the 1st roll. Taken @5.6 though
