CS3 academic - locked into extended version?

This may be a question for Adobe, but maybe someone has already asked them:

If I purchase the CS3 academic version, which is CS3 Extended, does that mean I will be locked into having to purchase the Extended version later when the next upgrade comes around? Or would I be able to just purchase the "regular" Photoshop upgrade? I don't really have any use for the additional features in the extended version.

I think you will find that you will have to wait till the next verson comes out. While I am sure adobe may have a couple people looking at the next project for CS4, I am sure that's a couple of years away.

they might find that people don't like having 2 different versons, or they might think that they could have 3 different versions. who knows.

Yea they sell them separate but CS2 is the same price as extended on the site.

It's not really going to matter because you really don't get much of a discount for upgrades with the academic discount. The difference between the prices of the academic PS upgrade and the regular upgrade is only about $5.00.

Instead of upgrading to PS CS3 for $194.00, I just added another $100 or so and got myself the full version of PS CS3 Extended with the academic discount since it's got features I can also use for my video editing projects.

That's true, but I bet there will be a significant difference between the upgrade price of the extended version vs. the upgrade price for the regular version.

Just my personal opinion but I don't think so. The upgrade price might be a little higher for the extended but I don't think it'll be significantly higher.
