Hi

Am going to move to a Mac in the next couple of months and would like to know the best system for the money.........

A new iMAC 20" or a used PowerMAc

I have a good Eizo screen so that's not a problem but wonder if I would be better with a used G5 dual processor Powermac to try and gaurd myself having to upgrade in the near future

I don't run games and would only have CS2/CS3 lightroom and Mac Office running

Any help and recommendations for spec appreciated

Thanks Simon

If you will be using CS3, the get the iMac. CS3 is MUCH faster on the Intel Macs. You can use a second monitor - I have a Dell 18" LCD attached.

You may want to check the Apple store for refurbs. Check often as stock varies daily. 20" iMacs go for $1299, 24" for $1699, & I have seen Mac Pros for $1899 (2 GHz).

You have to consider that in the UK a 20" imac is £995 or nearly $2000 - a used 2GHZ dual G5 with 4MB ram is about the same

I have already done the research on all this and put in the order the other day for a new iMac 20" with upgraded 2.33 duo core, 256 meg video, and 2GB ram. I heard from everyone that this will be a heck of machine for running LR and CS3.

Right now the UK Apple Store the 24" iMac is £1,179.00. No 20" currently available ... may change Monday or Tuesday.

Performance comparison between 24" iMac 2.16 GHz C2D & G5 Dual 2.5 GHz.

The photoshop results will change significantly with CS3 as it is now Universal Binary.
