I've been working to get a little more comfortable with my new Bigma so I have been taking more photos of birds than I ever have before. I have to tell you, those of you who shoot birds full time have my utmost respect! Those little buggers are FAST! :)

Anyway, here are two shots I got today after applying some advice I received from cfcRebel (Thanks, Fee!) C&C appreciated!

Thanks for the feedback! I sometimes feel like I'll never tame this monster, but every now and then I get something I like.

Very nice captures of the Jay, Becca! Better than any jay photos i currently have. :o
However, i notice you shot these at ISO100, shutter speed of 1/180s. IMHO, it's very risky (camera shake + subject motion) when shooting at 500mm. Try ISO400, f8. You'll get much faster shutter speed to offset camera shake, subject's movement if any. ;)

Glad you get the hang of the new lens. By the time of the Safari trip, you should be well prepared. ;) In the field should any question arise, I'm sure Dave will be right Bigma person to ask. :)
Shoot more birds to practice and post them here.

Thanks, Fee! I did have the lens mounted on a tripod, although I had the ballhead lose so I could rotate it freely as the birds moved. There's no way I could have gotten these shots handheld. That sucker is HEAVY!

Again, thanks for your advice about the aperature settings that work best. It did make a big difference in the IQ (at least to my inexperienced eye). I will try upping the ISO next time and see how it goes.

Nice job, Becca. I have done a bit of bird shooting myself but you are right....it is hard!
So are you liking your monster lens?

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.
