Hello all,
Im fairly new to the DSLR's and have a lense question. Im gettinging the Rebel XTi tomorrow , (almost got it today), and am undecided on my lense selection. I want to go with the Sigma 17-70, becasue of the great reviews, but have a inkling I may need something else. I do like room seetings, but will in the future do some sports shots. So do I get the 17-70 now and upgrade later or should I try to get a different lense (suggestions open) right now? My budget is $1000 give or take a few hundred.
Thanks
AG

If I were you, I'd simply use the kit lens (assuming you're not just buying the body) until you get a good feel for the camera and what you can do with that lens. Then, based on your shooting preferences, add additional lenses to suit those requirements.

Get Sigma 17-70 now and upgrade in about year from now, when you get to know what you really need for your style of shooting.

Hey thanks for the replies....I know the 17-70 is a great lense...had it in my hands a few hours ago. Just curious if there was another choice at this time for me....

Maybe a better question would be, which lense would work for me at a baseball or hockey game?
Again thanks for the replies!

LOL...I know the anticipation of wanting to get a new gadget. I have a feeling you might be getting the camera today:D

I too would vote for starting off with the Sigma first. It has enough focal range to be used for everyday situations. If you take photos from the stands at school games, then you may find yourself needing a longer lens. Although another thought would be to just get an extender for your current lens (it can multiply its focal length by 1.4 or 2).

Try the Sigma 55-200mm or the Canon 70-300mm those are great to take to Football and baseball games.
