After reading the insurance in the UK thread, I was interested as to what options are available here in the states.

Apr 21, 2007 16:01 | #2 I got mine as a rider policy on my home owners insurance. It is like $13 for every $1000 worth of equipment. It covers against dropping it or getting it wet and some other stuff but those were the 2 items I was concerned with. Everyday use: 7D2, 1.4x v3 Canon TC (sometimes the 2x v2 Canon TC), Canon 500mm f4 L IS USM; 6D, 24-105L

Full replacement value, drop it, loose it, someone steals it and it is covered. You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.

Covers full replacement etc etc. I have not had a reason to use it so I don't know how well the insurance company would actually hold to the policy, but I don't expect to need it, thats why it covers accidents (and theft)!

DavidJohn Member 118 posts Joined Mar 2007 Location: USA More info | I was advised NOT to do a rider on a homeowner policy. Very few (if any) homeowners policies will pay "replacement cost". Also, I was told that a rider policy will not allow you to add an additional "Loss Payee" such as an equipment rental company to allow you to rent high-end equipment (at least MINE would not).I purchased a policy through Travelers Insurance, and for only $500/year I receive two-million dollars of liability coverage (per occurance, 4-Million aggregate) and twenty-thousand dollars of equipment coverage at FULL REPLACEMENT value with a $250 deductable!! I compared a LOT of policies...and this one was far and away the best coverage for the money. The best thing about it is, you're NOT required to pay a dime up front...I was issued a binder number as soon as I finished the paperwork. Its has already paid for itself five-times over...my computer died, and I received a check before I even sent in my first premium!! _____________________________
