I was in Nanaimo, British Columbia this week for a couple of days and took the opportunity to bring my camera. I visited two city parks (Piper's Lagoon and Neck Point) both before and after work. Both were right on the shore and I managed to get shots of several new species.

At Neck Point within a distance of 300 metres of the parking lot I saw a harbour seal and river otter, common loon, a Bald eagle and great blue Heron. I photographed a male Hooded Merganser, Red-shafted flicker excavating a nest, Audubon's Warble and this California Quail! The last two were new life additions for me. :D

Anyway this is a beautiful bird but I only had time to get about 4 shots of him in thick brush before he left.

Bigma handheld with fill flash. 80% and 100% of full frame

Beautiful birds. I can see where they might be hard to see in some underbrush.

Excellent shots Stephen, the twigs seem to enhance the natural setting.

Well done Stephen, congrats on the life list. You sure are handling that bigma well, great detail on the feathers.

I think those are beautiful shots, I am amazed that you found them in the bush like that. rw

they have much more colour and detail than I've ever seen in a quail before, well done getting close to them.
