The hood that came with my 17-40 F4L is pathetic and from comparing shots with it on or off show no discernable difference abd I have seen photos of this lens with a more substantial hood on it.
Any ideas?

This only works on crop cameras (XT, XTi, 20D, 30D) where the 17mm equates to roughly 24mm in the crop world. Use these hoods on FF and you will have vignetting. Obsessive Gear List
