Is there a better hood for the 17-40L

The hood that came with my 17-40 F4L is pathetic and from comparing shots with it on or off show no discernable difference abd I have seen photos of this lens with a more substantial hood on it.

Any ideas?

I use the hood from the 24L for my 17-40L - it is the EW 83 D/2 - I got mine from an ebay seller in HK for about half the UK price.

you can also use the hood for the 24-105 L - the EW 83H

And i think ther eis at least one more, I'm sure someone will chime in.

That's what I use as it helps eliminate another hood in the camera bag. Works great for me.

obviously it all depends on what size sensor you have though...

If you're shooting FF (I now am!!!) you have to use what they gave you, but on the crops you can use "better" hoods since you're cropping the image with the sensor.

I use the EW-83J which was designed for the 17-55 f/2.8. It's a perfect match for the 17-40 too when used with a 1.6 crop.

I've just this second ordered an EW-83J off of Ebay, from a HK seller for £12 shipped - I suspect it is a 'replacement' ie rip-off copy - but so long as it does the job - i'll see if it's better than the hood for the 24L anyway, and sell the one I don't want to keep.

This only works on crop cameras (XT, XTi, 20D, 30D) where the 17mm equates to roughly 24mm in the crop world. Use these hoods on FF and you will have vignetting.

On a crop cam, you can use the more elegant and more effective hood of the 24mm F/1.4 L prime instead. There are third-party alternatives available too. Have a Google.

Disagree. It is far too short to provide significant shading of the lens, or any physical protection.

About all you can say for sure is that it keeps out of the field of view on a full-frame.

Oh it works, but just like the 70-200's, the 24-105, etc., it's only good at one focal length, or a very short range of FL's.

More lenses should be like the 24-70L.

I've ordered the EW-83J for it. I've heard that the hood for the 24L is a bit too tight, but that the EW-83J should be a perfect fit (it's less expensive as well).

The 24L hood certainly is a bit tight - I'll be able to compare in a week or so, and I'll update the thread then. If y'all can bear to wait, that is - perhaps someone else has tried both?
