I've ordered the EW-83J for it. I've heard that the hood for the 24L is a bit too tight, but that the EW-83J should be a perfect fit (it's less expensive as well).

i've used both hoods and that's correct ... the 24L hood is tight.

I too used a EW83DII hood instead of the stocker when I had my 17-40L and it was hell a lot better.

The 24L hood certainly is a bit tight - I'll be able to compare in a week or so, and I'll update the thread then. If y'all can bear to wait, that is - perhaps someone else has tried both?

Mines too tight also. Works but the 24-105 hood works alot better.

I use the EW-83DII hood on my 16-35 (on a 20D). It's a lot narrower than the original EW-83E that is supplied with the 16-35.

When I first tried attaching the EW-83DII, the fit was very tight. I made some measurements and found the diameter was right, though. Then, through some very detailed examination, I found some differences in the bayonet thread molding between the two heads. Once I made that discovery, a few minutes with a hobby knife solved the mounting problem. At the gaps between the "threads" on the hood, I found a little hump in the plastic that needed to be removed. There are two places to trim, one on the opposite side of the hood from the other.

Do you have the 24L, and did this modification change how well the hood sits on the 24L? :)

I do not have a 24L, so unfortunately I cannot tell you how the mod would have affected that fit.
