I want to use my 580 as a master with a 430.
I only want the 430 to fire, not the 580.
I followed the manual, but can't turn off the flash on the 580,
they both still fire. The camera is a 30D

You may just be seeing the pre flash that tells the slave what to do, Place a mirror in the shot and see if the master is lit up duing the exposure.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

I agree, it's most likely the preflash that you're seeing, not the actual flash

a camera

Ok, did some testing, that is it, just a preflash.
Thanks for the replies.
