These are very nice. Really nice collection. Looks like you were really close with the lapwing and stilt.

Every one of these are stunning. Beautiful work. I can hardly believe how sharp they are.
I'm not getting nearly that good of images with the same equipment on a tripod with remote shutter and mirror lockup. How close are you to these?

They are really good! I'll admit to a tendency to prefer primes but I certainly wouldn't be complaining about any of those shots. Nice work.

Cheers
Bill

Thanks all.

Shirley, I was between quite and very close to all of these birds with the exception of the greylag - these were all taken at a wildfowl park in Norfolk, England and the birds are very relaxed about people.

The light was horrible on the day I took these (I was never below 400 ISO, the stilt is 640 ISO and f/5.6, and the bearded tit is at 800 ISO and f/5.6) otherwise they'd have been better, I'm sure.

Bill, one advantage of zooms is the ability to zoom!

;)

Both the stilt and the lapwing were at less than 400mm, but I had no room to back up. I wouldn't have got those shots with say, a 400mm prime. The IS helped too - there are some lower-than-ideal shutter speeds here...

Thanks all.

If I'm honest these are just "OK" (don't get me wrong, I'm happy enough with them all, 2 & 3 being my favourites) but again I think they show something of the potential of the 100-400 with a converter/extender.

Keith this is a beautiful collection of shots. I'd be pleased to have any of these in my collection.

Thanks, Stephen,

these are all "tame" birds (I'm a birder first and foremost and really prefer wild bird photography), and as I say the light was grim on the day, so there's definitely room for improvement, on both a photographic and an emotional level!

;)

Thanks to you too, hTr.

Great series Keith, they are all great, but the bearded tit gets my vote for #1, very nicely done.
