They are from Chicago and do not get to see the beach often. The sun was out and it was hard for them not to squint. Any tips for next time?

You did a good thing to put the sun behind them, and the only thing you could do better would be to over expose the background to brighten up their faces, or use a reflector to bounce some light forward.. or fill flash...
