Taking a real risk here naming a bird--since I am usually wrong. :) This little guy was flitting all around me, hanging upside down on swaying branches eating little berries. Thanks for looking. 20D and the 400 5.6, Aperture priority, 1/2500, F-stop 6.3, ISO speed 800.

Wow Karen

I think you have the bird right and a very good capture. ISO 800 seems a little high, but I wasn't there. I typically shoot ISO 400 and can keep good shutter speed on my 20D.

But you didn't get noise and you got a good detailed shot.

Nice capture and the ID is correct. IMHO ISO 400 would have been a better choice as it still would have allowed a 1250/sec shutter speed at the same aperture. Mind you these guys do have a way of reacting to 20D and 30D shutters and 1/2500 sec would have frozen that action whereas 1/1250 might not have.

Thanks for the info and for taking the time to respond. Gotta check my ISO, should have been lower.

This came out nice Karen. Very little noise on my monitor. I'll say it's a Black cap. This is one of the few times when the bird on the screen really matches the pictures in my books. They show the Black cap's bib is squared off near the shoulder, like this one and the Carolina's bib is pointed.

First of all - it's a fine shot, Karen.

I agree about the Carolina Chickadee. Good eye morehtml.

I'm not seeing much in the way of noise - The 20D does a good job with noise even at ISO 800.

Lastly, if you have PS, adjusting levels will do wonders for this shot.

Nice shot Karen. I'd think it's a Carolina Chickadee also. Not only does it look similar
to the Black-capped, though a little smaller, and it lives in your area.

All these years I've been pretty sure of myself calling these guys black capped chicks, and now I'm finding that I"ve probably been wrong all along?
I want a new field guide... one with interactive corrections.
Great shot, whatever it is, Karen.

Karen, wonderful capture. Guess he really wanted his picture taken based on your description of his antics.

Oh noooooo! I was so sure I had the name right this time! Unbelievable! That does it. I'm going to the Nature and animal forum, I seldom mix up a horse with a camel. :(
