I had this question as well. My buddy shoots with a Nikon D200 and uses Mac, I shoot Canon 5D and use PC. Every time we upload a new image, and open the image from his camera on his computer and we look at his PPI it says 300 ppi with no adjustments made at all, straight from the camera...
Every time I look at my PPI from an image taken with a full frame 12.8 megapixel camera on PC it says 72 ppi.
Why is this? Seems very odd...
It is because DPI is, for the most part, a meaningless number, but because it is part of the Exif standard they have to put some number there. It could be 1 or 1,000. What matters is PPI which expresses the relationship between pixels and print size, and therefore depends on whether the image is in its native size or has been changed by cropping or resampling and also depends on the size of the print paper.
