Wakamatsu tea and silk

This is related to my important grave site post. A very ordinary photo but I had to post it paired with a painting. The Wakamatsu Tea and Silk colony was the first permanent Japanese imigrants to the US and included the first Japanese women to come to the US. The ranch building was built in the 1840s and still stands today.

Oh yeah, and I'm British so I realise thats pretty weak compared to European historical standards. Its still pretty interesting though.

Nice, thanks for the history lesson. I think it's cool to relate a historical site to an old photo or painting.

thats pretty cool to hear about some OLDER ca history. i think thats the oldest building i have heard of that stands in califoria. we came from NC not too long ago. and the oldest part of the military town that we lived in was from the 1780's. and i realize that is nothing compared to the history in Britain. or even further up the coast lines on the east coast.. but at least its something. lol.

I have a picture book of my town filled with pictures from right around the turn of the century. Many of those buildings are still standing, and I keep telling myself, I'm going to get around and try and replicate as many of the shots in that book as I can, from today's perspective. Still haven't gotten around to doing any of it though...

recreating this one was actually hard to do. To get just in the right spot would have meant standing in the middle of a road that wasn't quite as busy when the painter did his version.
