Female House Sparrow gathering nest building material.

Boy, these city birds don't mind humans so much. I actually had to back up on this one as it was closer than my lens could focus, and it posed for a few shots. No crop - you'd have thought I'd think to zoom out....

Nice shot, Scott.

I know what you mean by being too close to the bird with the 100-400. I had a similar experience with a nuthatch. First I had to set the switch from 6.5 to 1.8. But it still wouldn't focus so I had to back up two steps. And of course the nuthatch, which had been in a perfect pose when I was trying to get the picture, had decided to creep along to the other side of the tree when I finally had him in focus.! :(

Don't you hate that? :)

You'd be amazed at what a set of extension tubes does for the 100-400. Many of my butterfly shots are done with the 100-400 - a 20mm tube lets you focus pretty closely. And a 12mm tube gives you a bit of a magnification boost when shooting small birds, and you still can reach out to 25 or 30 feet - and if they get *real* close you can still get them.

I rarely go anywhere without the 100-400 and tubes. I might leave some of the other stuff home, but that lens and the tubes are permanent fixtures. It's just a very useful setup that will do most anything.
