The older STi's had DCCD (driver controlled centre diff) which you could alter the amount of torque that was sent to the front wheels , from 33%(effectively open diff) to 50%(locked diff) . I believe there were 6 settings allowing various amounts of locking , also pulling on the handbrake automatically sends the diff open allowing you to do handbrake turns
