On Friday night I went and saw the movie 300, I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised, particularly by the visual effects and the use of colour for different moods.

So for anyone else who has seen this movie, do you have any idea how the visual colours and styles were achieved? I looks like they use selective colouring and a high contrast in most shots, some similar in effect to cross processing but with a different colouration.

Any ideas? I have some fighting stills that it would be interesting to emulate this sort of look with.

Well with still photography it would be a lot easier :D I suspect they did the same thing as they did for Oh Brother, Where Out Though. As memory serves, that was the first movie to ever be digitally processed. Granted, for 300, it was all filmed on bluescreen too....so the backgrounds are all made up. I would think they then went in and selectively desaturated skin tones and upped the amount of red in the capes. The blood effects got to be too cheesy a CG effect IMO.

But if you really want to emulate their look....you may have the fighting skills now, but do you have a six pack yet? :D

I am a long way personally from looking the part :o

I have done some promo work recently for a local branch (NZ) of the Extreme Fighting League, lots of touch guys and six packs all round, would be interesting to apply the '300 look' to those images. Might end up being a complete waste of time, but then again it might not be.

Here are some sample images for those who haven't seen the movie:

If you are going to post that as a response, a link would be helpful, I did a quick search, but found nothing.
