Long time lurker here in 'Birds'. I've so amazed by what so many of you capture. I've finally decided to try take my first flight into the world of bird photography.

I went to see a mother goose in my area who is keeping her nest.

Was hoping for some comments regarding the composition. I'm not familiar with the "rules" of bird photography. I thought I'd play around with portrait and landscape orientation. I'm prefer the landscape mainly because the goose is wider than tall. I just thought with the reeds running up and down, portrait might work.

Lighting was late afernoon so there are long shadows. I know a lot of the good was in shadow but I thought it was fairly effective. I tried to keep her head in the light. I would assume a cloudy day would be better (or after sunset).

I think they are dark and lack detail, your composition is fine but you want to leave room for the bird to look or fly into.

Nice Series of behavior shots and I will look forward to more from you.

Or some fill flash. And maybe crop some more to show the bird bigger.

Not sure why you got no comments. Things are moving very fast here lately and a lot of lurking and no typing going on. ;)
