This train was stopped at the Palm Springs Depot today, and it gave me a little time to play around. It was a fairly clear day for a change.

This was taken from the north (shady) side. I like this perspective becase you can see both the front and rear of the train in the distance. I don't take too many shots from this side because it's a little risky. trains occasionally come up on the second main pretty fast, and I don't move that quickly. Also, they occasionall stop, and I sometimes have to walk around them to get back to my car. This trains wasn't moving, so I didn't have the problem.

This was taken with the 24-105, ISO 125, F/5.6, 1/200 Sec., 105mm

The next two were taken from the other side, and I just wanted to see what would happen taking essentially the same shot with very different focal lengths.

100-400L, ISO 125, F/6.3, 1/200 Sec., 120mm

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Nice ones Chief...I see they managed to sneak some SP power in there to break up the yellow monotony. UP must be the official power of Tupperville...I see they have a nice red ring!

Unfortunately, yes. I'm sick of yellow (it's all we see out here).

Thanks, everyone.

Some BNSF orange would look okay, but you gotta take what you can find.

Nice shots...yer fortunate to have locomotive close by. Down here, the closest train track is about 20 miles away, and it's just a spur, so thing terribly large runs on it.

Nice work, & a great location, too. About time we had some shots without the "Velvia look". I'd almost forgotten what a "normal" shot looked like? ;)

(OK, OK, I've done it too!) :D

Perfection.Great trains, great backdrop, and very well captured.

Unfortunately, yes. I'm sick of yellow (it's all we see out here).

Send some over here, I'm partial to the UP paint scheme. :-).

Yes, they are nice shots.

What I think is more important is the valuable lesson they teach.

Your use of wide and telephoto show how valuable a tele can be in compressing the shot. It brings the mountains into sharp focus and makes the picture even that much better than the wide.

Colors are excellent.

In your desire to show front to back, you should exercise your 24mm tilt-shift lens. That's one shot I'd love to see.
