Well, it arrived this mornig just in time for a mandatory trip I will be taking.

My dear Grandmother's "estate" in Georgian Bay Ontario needs to be settled.. the closing is this weekend. The setting for my childhood summers,.. and three generations before in our family has been sold :(

This will then most likely be the last trip I take to Georgian bay :(

Anyway... on a lighter note.. the MkII arrived just in time  so it will be along for the trip.

I expect to be gone for a week..

So don't make things difficult for the Boss while I'm gone!!!!!!!

I will not have any access to this forum for the week.. so no sample oics from me untill late next week...

But I am Soooooo psyched it arrived in time.

All you CDW poeple... my order there is cancelled so many will be bumped up a notch. (CDW received ONE MkII on friday BTW.. no idea who got it though :) )

P.S,.. I'm at work.. so I have not even triggered the shutter yet.. it's just sitting there .. taunting me...

Be good!

Congrats on the camera CDS. We'll be waiting to see pics of what I'm sure is a beautiful place.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Canon 40d, some lenses, lots of odd accessories - some of which I never use.

CDS - I'm glad to hear that you got the camera in time - the Georgian Bay area is very nice. I visited up there about 10 years ago.

Its a sad thing to lose a family member as well as a family heirloom of sorts. When my great uncle passed on, they had to sell the estate - in this case, a farm in Indiana. My great uncle was one of the first folks in the area to have electricity (batteries and a generator).

I last visited the farm at the time that the estate was being sold - lots of childhood memories for me there. I'll likely not be there again either.

Looking forward to some great pictures from the great thawing north!

Congrats CDS. I'm so envious. The Canadian retailers do not have theirs yet as of yesterday.... I called a whack of them to check.

Enjoy your trip, even though the circumstances aren't the best. The weather isn't all that great up here yet ?!

At least you put the subject line in clearly enough so that you shouldn't get rapped for sharing this information with us :D :D

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Congratulations! and enjoy the trip. I got mine this afternoon. I was surprised to see that the controlls are very different then the 10D. There are settings available I haven't seen before. Three menus instead of one. It looks like alot of new stuff to learn. I was pleasantly surprised that it will allow you to take multple exposure readings and average them for you. The reports so far on image quality have been excellent over at Rob Galbraith's forum.
Regards,
Scott

Congrats on the MKII. Hopefully, you will have some time to get some great shots of the place for memories.

Have fun - we'll try to keep it down to a dull roar until you get back.

Just took it for a 15 minute spin on my Lunch break..

Yes the 1D controls are VERY different than the 10D.. the MkII even differes from the 1D in a few ways.. (although that difference is more evolutionary)

Compared to the 1D here are some first impressions;

Much quieter shutter operation. (Still louder than 10D) but the 1D sounds like a basement bulkhead door being slammed shut.. the MkII seems much smmother and quieter. I vaguley recall hearing that the MkII shutter is sized for the 1.3X CMOS where-as the 1D was full frame? Maybe this explains it.

Shutter release is smoother on my unit than the 1D and much more controllable in Hi Speed 8.5 fps. (on the 1D it is VERY hard to shoot a single frame in HS burst.. so I tend to leave it in "slow burst" 3FPS)

Jepg size settings are more intuitive.. the largest / highest quality jpeg is a BIG (larger than the default) at about 1/2 the file size of a full RAW. Thats BIG.

AF did not jump at me as being a lot faster than the 1D.. but after the huge leap from 10D to 1D.. the 1D to MkII can't be much more than an incremental baby step.. :)

...O-kay,. so I've only held it for about 15 minutes of shooting dogs and "justa" sparrow..

But every operation seems "smoother" than the 1D.. very nice feel. This could be in my head.. or just a matter of the afore mentioned shutter release and shutter sound.

Back to work.. :)

CDS,
You might have it backwards...the 1Ds is the full frame camera and the original 1D was still 1.3x crop. Maybe they did somethink to make it less noticable. I remember gooung 35mm to 10D and wondered where the ka-thunk of the mirror went.

It's probably a good idea for you to get out of town for a few days. Those of us in the queue at CDW are not pleased with you, and some of us might even be looking around for a rope.

Do have fun with it. We'll try not to let things get too far out of hand here.

Take care,

Thosey

I think CDS is referring to the size of the shutter and not the sensor ;)

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

'Zactly!

I know the 1D is a 1.3X sensor,. But I think it used the 1V's full fram shutter (being the first Digital "1" for Canon) The MkII still 'may" use a full size shutter.. but I seem to remember reading that along with the new shutter design that makes it rated for a longer life than the 1D shutter... they had in fact reduced it's weight.. or size etc...
