near miss last night at the lake...

this is why there are air traffic controllers! these two herons very nearly ran into each other... the one in the rear of this photo, which was the one i was focused on from watching him come in across the bay, nearly got "run over" by the one in the foreground, which came out of the reeds to the right. the one in the back had to jink hard to starboard and shed some of what little altitude he had - you can see his right wingtip grazing the water - to avoid a mid-air collision. 30D, Sigma, 400mm, 1/1000 @ f5.6...

but he recovered nicely, and banked smoothly to port for a landing...

Nice catch Rocky, but I don't think it was an accident. These guys will harrass each other just for fun or territory. I got some shots of two herons in the same stretch of water a couple weeks ago. One jumped up and flew towards the other and tried to tap the other one on the head as he flew by, then landed 30 feet further downstream. The one that got tapped was the one that caught and ate that monster Bass. :)
