Hey everyone,
So I am thinking that I am going to buy the 30D, which I am really excited about. Anyways, I got a position at this online magazine, Tommy2.net (more pop music based), where I will be dong photography in addition to some other things. It will be a good way to add to my very minimal portfolio.

Sooo, onto my question... I am wondering what lenses you all might suggest for concerts. he concerts will ary from clubs, to arenas, so I need something versatile. I am not sure if I can get both in one lense, but if someone can suggest some good lenses, that would be fantastic. Thanks,

-Brandon

I guess it depends on how close you can get. The 24-70L 2.8 will work well if you can get close to the action. The 70-200L 2.8 will work well if you are further away. You just need something fast. At least 2.8.

It also obviously depends on the lighting conditions at the venue. I primarily use a 70-200 2.8IS for my daughters' classical concerts, as I typically take photos from the balcony section, where I can more freely move about, albeit at a distance. Even with the lens wide open, I'm usually shooting ISO 800-1000 there.

You should read what this pro has to say about concert photography: http://photo.net …oncerts/mirarchi/concer_i (external link)

you'll probably want a fast prime too, maybe a 50 1.4 or 85 1.8, as some stage lighting is awful! I've found myself at 1600 at 1.8 a couple of times, just to get 1/100!

Since you can get close and are going to do clubs as well, get the efs 17-55/2.8 IS. Run your ISO up as needed.

I have done some research on the efs 17-55/2.8 IS after being suggested this lense. Everything I read was good, except that it is prone to many dust problems. And that it was too expensive, and something about an L series. I am fairly new to photography, so insight from anyone would be much appreciated

I second the 17-55 if you are doing clubs.
If lighting is good, you might be able to get by with only zooms.
For bigger stages a 70-200 is a must IMO.
There is a FAQ in the performing Arts section ;)
