Ok I'll give the searcha go

It is under Edit > Preferences > Advanced ( at least on CS2 Bridge)

No I never used to have to - sometings amiss

Preview ia a Mac image viewing default program. I have set the prefs to open images in ACR from Bridge, and normally it does, but under the circumstances above it doesn't - big mystery, Might need to reinstall

Might need a reinstall. Maybe something is messed up???

Preferences>Advanced>Cache

By way of reference - my AMD 64 X2 3800 w/2Gig memory is not having this issue. I will say that the CS3 Beta had some similar issues that went away with the release version. Your system would certainly appear to be fast enough assuming you have memory available.

On the 'Preview' thing: That's an OS preference, nothing to do with Bridge.
In the finder, ctrl-click (right click) a CR2 file. That gives you a list of options. Go 'Open with'. Preview will probably be at the top, as default. Go to the bottom. ("other")
Select the program you want them to open with, and tick the box "Allways open with"

pps: when I double click on a RAW icon that has not generated a thumb it opens in 'Preview ' not ACR as it is set to do in the prefs!???

Which of the two kinds of raw was that: With or without thumb?
If PS is default, that's what's used to open the file with if you double click..

without. When they have thumbs they open fine (in photshop via ACR)
Te bizarer thing is when tey open in preview when without thumbs - that IS odd!
