Again, since I've never seen this species before (and because I've been wrong more often than right, lately) I'm trusting the descriptions of the female grosbeak in my field guide.

Do I have it right, for a change?

My stupid book has a blue grosbeak and an evening grosbeak but no rose, male or female, so I don't have a clue. I bet it is though if there are a bunch of pairs around.

My book shows it as a Female. Almost. My book shows a tiny bit of yellow at the bak end of that white "eyebrow", and no yellow on the wing. Go figure.

I believe that this indeed a female Rose Breasted Grosbeak but it is in a transitional molt from non breeding to breeding plumage.

It's one goofy looking bird, whatever it is... I thought it might be a juvie at first, but the guide says they have a little yellow at the wing line, so this must be a female after all.
Thanks for the help, guys.

This would be what the female looks like all the time... they dont get breeding plumage...

Point taken. She does look a little rough though.

Spring is party time for birds. She's just hung over. Nice capture. :D
