Can someone please enlighten me as to what a good, simple program would be best for compressing my huge movie files?

Well, if you just want to store it and have it much smaller, make it a WMV file using Windows Movie Maker (it's part of Windows XP and probably Vista). you can specify a total file size for the entire file.
