Where should I go to register a website domain? There are a few places that charge different amounts.

To register it, go with whoever charges the least, but factor in you may have to pay to transfer it.

One of my friends uses 1and1 (external link) and pays $3 / month for hosting. I use godaddy for my domain.

Depends whether you just weant to register and use the name or you want the associated hosting services.

I use 1and1 to register my domain and host my email accounts but don't use any web hosting. I pay £3 ($6) a year for the domain and 99p ($2) a month for the emails.

I don't recommend 1and1 for a long list of reasons (all of which I experienced personally not just read about second hand), which could probably be better explained by googling 1and1 sucks or something like that. godaddy.com definitely gets my vote of confidence.

pair.com. They aren't the cheapest, but have been in business for more than 10 years, I think, and have always been really helpful with any problems I've had. I have about 10 domain names through them and host about 20 sites. Good quality service.

Just make sure that you have ownership of the domain and it's not just registered by the company who give you access to it.

Don't forget that you're buying the domain name, not just renting it.
