I've searched the threads and have seen a bunch of homemade versions. That's cool and all, but a lot of homemade stuff can't stand up to the rigors of pro wedding shooting. Does anyone make anything that I can BUY and is of high quality that will let me use gels on my flashes? Something that will allow quick gel changes, can handle being smacked around here and there, and doesn't require me being super careful not to rip the gels?

You're not the only one curious about this. I've been looking around casually, but have yet to find anything.

Yes, absolutely. You'd think it was something that is common, yet it isn't. I haven't found any at all.

No kidding. I wish I had contacts in manufacturing...I could probably fill a niche! :)

I'm thinking of buying the Gary Fong Whaletale, and amputating the tail off it just so I can use the slide in gel trays. My only question is... are the amber and green gels actually balanced with tungsten/fluor or are they just funky colours you can fool around with? If they actually were designed to be balanced with tungsten fluorescent then I'm interested.

I have been using these gels with a black backdrop to change or alter the color for portraits. Still in the experiment phase but they do change the color.
Here is the link.........
http://lumiquest.com/lq971.htm (external link)

Using them behind your subject can dramtically alter the backdrop.

I would emagine you could use them to correct (in camera) white balance but their are better WB tools. Expodisc is what we use for the most part and when time allows during wedding portrait poses. It has saved more time for more important editing in the darkroom.

The expodisc is cool, but what I want the gels for is to balance my flash with the ambient lights. Typically, in a tungsten lit hall, when I use my flash and adjust white balance so skin tones are proper, everything in the background that is lit with tungsten turns orange. I want the entire frame to appear balanced. Hence the gels to put my flash in the tungsten or fluorescent temperature range.

Also, I don't like using diffusers on my flashes, so the lumiquest is out too. But thanks for the suggestions!

You know Corey, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing with my omnibounce!!! But I need something where I can switch easily and quickly between fluorescent and tungsten. Tape or velcro is not good for this.

Hey, do you know if fong's whaletale gels are balanced to tungsten and fluorescent?

this is really cool Corey, when i started reading this thread, the omnibounce was the first thing that came to my mind and then i saw your post!!! :D

my thought was to place the gels in a rigid frame and cut the omnibounce like yours and have a slot on the top so you can slide the framed gels into the slot. :D

Good idea, but how would you frame the gels?

hey... now you got me thinking. Maybe I can just buy the whaletail gels and use them in a cut up omnibounce!!! Hmmm, I wonder how big the whaletail gels are....

now, that my friend is easy! take a smaller sized omnibounce (like the one for the 430EX) and cut it up like wonder bread -- thinly sliced, now you have a perfect frame! all you have to do now, is sandwich a gel between two cut-up omnibounce and glue! PERFECT! :D

ps - did you know that the 430ex omnibounce fits inside a 580ex omnibounce perfectly? ;)
