canonloader Cream of the Crop More info | Apr 25, 2007 12:25 | #3 This is a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker. They are known for drumming on things other than trees to attract mates. This one lives in one area in a wooded park and is building a nest hole, but I have heard him drumming on one of those iron Bar-B-Q grills they put up in parks. Weirdest thing. Apr 25, 2007 12:44 | #4 Thanks for the info. This must be the male of the species? When the hormones kick in males (yes I'm male) have a tendency to do strange things! If you're afraid of failure ... you'll never succeed!

Apr 25, 2007 12:56 | #5 Woodpeckers are considered songbirds, although they don't sing. Instead of singing, they drum on things to announce their territory. I think both males and females do it. Nice yellow-bellied sapsucker you that there - they are really striking to see! -Liz
