do you have this lens? what quality pictures does it take? do you know enough about lenses to give me an informed answer even if you don't have it. I found a refurbished one at adorama for $299. The other option is an 85mm f/1.8 at B&H for $339. I know they are waaaaaay different types of lenses, and I know about the latter, but I was just wondering about the quality of the 28-200

The 28-200 is probably one of Canon least impressive lenses and it's close to the bottom of reviewed zooms at FM... the 85/1.8 however is a real gem.

I would check out the Sigma 55-200 if you want a great focal range with better than expected image quality. At around US$150, still have almost half your money left over so you can buy another lens (or a nice night out) ;)

But from what I have seen, the 85 f/1.8 is a great lens too!
