I have been having problems with exposure and I tried some metering changes.

Dark Bird with bright BG.

Partial Metering

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 403 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE


Center Weighted
IMAGE NOT FOUND

Here is a Mallard Drake on grass Partial

Now for In-Flight shots I was not Steady enough to hold focus using either had to go to Evaluative

Yes Common Grackles
A dark bird is all I wanted and the mallard is all mid tones

I played with some metering on my other post of a white bird but Hard to say there is a clear advantage one way or another.

Evaluative is as good as anything and M if you have fixed light situation.

If you can cover the spot area fully with the most important color to expose then it's ok. Otherwise it will depend how much dark or light bg element is in the spot and your metering will be off accordingly. In example #1 above if the spot was on the black only it would work.

In number 1 the sky was predominate and unexposed the bird
