No idea about the ID. It looks as if its walking in oil - or is this mud at low tide?

My best guess would be Greater, the bill appears considerably longer than the head and slightly upturned... I hope you weren't crawling through that mud

Very good captures Jim. I'm looking at my Lesser Yellowlegs and look pretty much the same as yours but as Downy pointed out about the bill, now I'm confused.

My book shows both beaks about the same size, but the lesser is only 10" tall the Greater is 14" and looks fatter.

Either way, these look a lot better than mine. How do you get so close.

I was able to take these from the truck alongside a slough at low tide, thus the mud----
