adobe photoshop CS3 extended ?

Hi I have never had any of the photoshop CS programs, but being new to photograpy myself some friends recommeded I get CS3. Right now I only have Photoshop elements 5.

My question is what is the difference in just cs3 and cs 3 extended? I have the opportunity to get this, but don't want to waste money if the extended version means you have to have a previous version for it to work?

Maybe someone here can help me out with that.

Go with straight CS3. You probably won't get much out of the extended features (I wouldn't).

Hi, I hate to call you dogface , Will the cs3 extended still do the same thing that CS3 does? But with just more features for other projects. I have the opp to get the extended version for the same price as the cs3 regular thats why I ask.

CS3 extended allows you to work on the Skins and textures of 3D objects, it does not Create 3D objects.

To create most people use 3D studio Max and it runs about $3000.00.

Unless you do 3D games or Animation, Alot of Architecual work, or Scientific photography the Extended version will not give you anything more than just CS3 standard will.

Its seem to have advanced 32 bit support for HDR where as the CS3 basic is listed as 'basic support'.

Yes. Extended is 3d modelling and better HDR support. If you're only doing photography work, then the standard package will be for you.

CS3 Extended also has an advanced raw processing capability although I can't tell you what that is off the top of my head. But for the most parts, if you are coming from Elements and don't do any video editing or animation where CS3 Extended can be very useful, the "vanilla" CS3 should be all you'll need.

General rule of thumb:

If you ever have to ask someone if you need something, chances are you probably don't.

If you're not getting the results you need from Elements, then I would recommend something like CS3. You have to understand that Photoshop is an extremely powerful program and is overkill if you want to do quick photo edits. It's a vast program that takes time to master, but mastering it is a reward in itself. I've been using it for a couple of years nows, and I'm still learning. I would recommend you download the trial version of any software you're considering. You might find that you're getting along just fine with your Volkswagen and don't need that Porsche after all.

i too am considering purchasing cs3 extended, as i qualify to buy it from academicsuperstore for 289.95

But.... my laptop screen went kaput two weeks ago, and i am going to have to shell out the big bucks for a new laptop (costs 389 to repair screen on a nearly 3 year old machine), so i want to make sure vista is functioning properly before i order cs3 and try to install it.

And then there's the question of what laptop to get.... any suggestions?

I got extended just because it can utilize some of the videocard for some of it's processing. Need to maximize my 8800....

Do tell more on these as I wasn't aware of that. Got a 8800 GTS OC coming for my new setup I'm putting together soon.
