Great shot, I saw my first one of the season today, but it was gone before I could even think about the camera!

I stand motionless about 8 feet from the feeder with my 30D fitted with an EF 100-400mmL IS. When a hummer comes I very slowly elevate the camera (which is preset of course) and start shooting.
AV
ISO 320
Aperture 5.6
Speed 1250
EC + 1 2/3 (to compensate for bright sky)
So I guess I am very very slow...not quick. I really think that the hummer is so fast that to him we are like watching a tree grow.:)

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Clone out the feeder and this is over the top! Super details in the head and great light.

Funny you should mention that. I was just thinking about it!
