Any suggestions or ideas for cataloging/organizing of images on external media, such as CD-R, DVD-R, and hard drives (not connected). I think I want something that will generate thumbnails, viewable in an browser such as Internet Explorer, and able to move around the database or indexes to different computers.

I've found this one http://www.softsea.com/review/IMage-CATalog.html (external link) , does pretty good, but there are a few things it doesn't do very well at. For free what can one expect.

What can I get for $29.95 or less?
Only kidding....

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

iView media Pro (external link) does the job.
For finding back files on CD based on name, CDFinder (external link) is nice.

Crap, that certainly busts my $29.95 budget.

Looks like they've got a trial I can tryout.

Definately try it out first.
Go to TheDambook.com and read the IView forum for some thoughts on it before you proceed, or else get the book (The DAM Book - by Peter Krogh).
Knowing HOW you are going to organize your images is as important as doing it.

Tried the iView Media Pro 3 trial and it ended up a no-brainer so far as purchasing it. Nothing else I had tried could do what I wanted. This does it all and then some. I even got lucky and was able to order it with educational pricing.

Thanks for the recommendations :) :)

Another thing you can try is create contact sheets and save them as jpegs in the root folder of the CD/DVD. Then you can choose how big you want the thumbnails to be.
