Hi all, I am having a big problem,

I set my camera to jpeg + raw all excitedto try raw for the first time, and to my huge disappointment, this setting doesn't seem to work. Just to make sure, i set to raw only and I did see CR2 file in the browser. But with jpeg + raw, there were 2 jpegs for every shot, named like this,
IMG_0830 (5).jpg and
IMG_0830.jpg
both the same file size.
PLEASE PLEASE HELP - Do I bring the camera in for repair - it's under warranty ?

thanks all, I am very concerned about this

Don’t worry, the problem is not with your camera, it’s with your computer, most likely.

What is your operating system?
Which software did you use trying to open .CR2 files?
Do you have any of Canon software installed on your computer?

windows XP, I used photoshop, which opens a raw dialog box up by itself, I do not have any canon software installed. I even tried browsing the camera itself for CS2 files, but no luck.

You cannot access image files in camera directly, using Windows Explorer, therefore you cannot copy them to the computer.
For that, you either have to install Canon EOS Utility (which came on CD, together with your camera), or to spend 20 bucks maximum on USB card reader.
USB reader is much faster, but Canon software has some features that might be interesting..

Furthermore, to be able to preview RAW files in your computer, you need to install Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer.
Here is the link, give it a try:

Also check for latest ACR update on Adobe site..

hermeto, this doesnt make sense, If I shoot raw only, as I stated in my post, no problem, only with raw+jpeg. So, my guess is your suggestion would solve nothing unless I missed something. I did state specifically, I see the CR2 file in the browser IF I shoot in raw only, raw and jpeg gives me 2 jpegs.

the only way I see a way that I am wrong, is that if the raw file produced by RAW+jpeg is a different raw format then the raw alone produces, but I would like someone to confirm that, then maybe a canon software would be necessary, but I see no documentation on this.

Therefore, I assume, the raw+jpeg is not working

I am shooting in p mode, so it should work

No, that’s not the problem..
What you see is one .jpg file, and one thumbnail .jpg file pulled out of .CR2 for preview.

When you set everything in oreder, you’ll see 2 files with the same name, and different extensions – one .jpg, the other .CR2.

I agree: If you look on the card (using a card reader), you'll only see 2 files: The CR2 and the jpg.

I agree with the "get a card reader" suggestion. An onboard one is easy to install and it lets you copy your files 100 times faster than by plugging the camera to the USB port.

Check out doug's link. It has the answer to your question.

=doug's link]It turns out that if you shoot Raw-only you can still access the CR2 files through that driver anyway (you may need to check the "communication mode" setting if you have an XT/350D).

But if you shoot Raw+JPEG on an XT/350D or XTi/400D, the WIA driver latches onto the JPEG and will not let you see the CR2 file.
