Piping Plover

One of our most endangered shorebirds. This one was very active and cooperative.

Very nice series, I wonder if its going to eat that fly on the sand in the last pic.

Hahah, I only noticed that when I processed these images. It probably did.

These are wonderful shots of one of my favourite birds!! Love them!! Cute little fella ain't he? Thanks for sharing.

He's a cutie. I bet he did eat it. With a short beak like that he isn't going after anything too deep in the sand.

Bob, wonderful shots of this very attractive little bird. I also think it's very rewarding to get such great captures of endangered species to share with others. Sometimes this may be all thats left sadly to share with the upcoming generations.

Excellent images, Bob. Your beach looks way too clean to be North Beach at the Hook. Unless they did an Earth Day clean-up. Where were you?

Although this guys looks a lot like the fella that was accompanying us on our walk along North Beach. Must be related!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Ed...it was taken at the Hook, but between lots b and c. I parked in c and walked south toward a large group of gulls and there it was. Last weekend I saw 4 there actually and a first year Iceland Gull. Don't know if you saw those shots, here's that link.

I keep "forgetting" to check out the ocean side down there. When I come onto the island I am usually thinking Plum Island, Spermaceti Cove, Horseshoe Cove - all on the bay side. I should remember to check out the ocean side as well as the dune area on that side.

I just checked out the Iceland Gull. Nice shots. I am still in awe of you folks who can segregate the gulls - 1st winter, 2 year, breeding. They all look alike to me.

That's like at the bird walk today. A bird flew overhead. One of the guides (admittedly a local expert) looked up and said "that's a Ring-billed Gull." Of course, who's going to argue. It was a gull so why not a Ring-billed.

Back to the Hook. We've got to get down there at least one more time before Memorial Day and time to pay to get in! Then we probably won't head back down again until September.
