Bald eagles, which used to leave this area during the coldest portion of winter and return come late February to start nesting, have been staying all winter now. The ice just went off the lakes around here, and the eagles are very happy.

Canon 20D, Canon 100-400L IS at 400mm, iso400, 1/1000 at f10, center-weighted metering, Al servo focus mode, handheld from a boat

The composition makes this one for me. Very nice action and placement of the eagle in the frame.

Very nice. Some day I am gonna have to visit Mitch, and find some of these. Never seen one around here, but this one sure makes it worth it to see.

Nice.

I hear ya Mitch...maybe once the wife and I move, a trip may be due in the winter. If the job goes through, I will be in the land of Sunshine...Florida...so, let's see what happens. Might need some 'winter' if the Sunshine State is where we end up in the next month or two. See ya.

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Wow, taken from a boat - you're braver than I. I'll be heading up your way in a few weeks for a BWCA trip. I've never been there before so I'm really looking forward to it. Won't be bringing my camera along though. Maybe I'll have to try one of your photo excursions sometime, that looks like fun!

Thanks, everybody.

Liz, if you bring your camera gear in a dry bag and don't take it out until you hit land for your campsite you'll be good to go. I won't take my camera unprotected in a canoe, though I will in larger boats. This was shot out of a 16-foot, wide-beam, very stable fishing boat, the same one I sometimes bring clients out in on the excursions.

Have fun up here. The orchids may be starting when you get here, and a bunch of other wildflowers will already be in bloom. I was just up the Echo Trail this afternoon, and I expect the marsh marigolds and some other things will be blooming by next weekend.

Thanks, Brandon. It was a wavy day, and that lens was wobbling all over the place. I was lucky to get a few in focus.

A different time in a similar situation, I was actually knocked overboard as I stretched awkwardly to get a shot and a wave smacked the boat. :(

I didn't have the strap over my neck, so I was able to dump the camera on a boat cushion before I went over. Lucky. :D
