We were playing Scrabble on the back deck (an obsession more than a game...) when this brilliant blue bird flashed by and landed in a maple tree. I knew it wasn't a bluebird, but didn't know exactly what it was. Found it in the field guide fifty shots later... damn near distracted me to the point of losing the Scrabble game.

That's a stunningly beautiful bird, do you think he wanted to play?

Beautifull bird, is it missing its left eye?

It's hard to tell from these shots. The bird is a deep blue and has a black mask over the eyes. i haven't noticed it on any of the other shots, but I'll go back and look.
Thanks for the comments. I can't believe how beautiful that shade of blue is on this bird. I added no color saturation, in fact, probably lightened the coloration in PS trying to get the feather detail visible.

Indigo buntings are always worth stopping whatever your doing for. Lucky you to have one come to your back yard!

Two real keepers Village. It's interesting how the upper bill is a completely different colour than the lower one.

I just checked some of the other pictures and didn't notice anything wrong with this bird's left eye. He's still eating sunflower seeds from the deck behind our house, but we can barely make him out since it's nearly dark out. Hope he hangs around for a while, I'd love to get more images of this one.
Thanks to all who have commented on this post.
