Finally, Mother Goose!

I think all of us who go to the Wetlands have watched this goose sit on her nest. Today she was there like always, but as I stood there she raised up and turned around, and there was a flurry of little yellow chicks moving around! It was so cute. She was quite attentive-at one point something startled her and she flattened down, covering the chicks and stretched out her neck, glaring off to the side like she was saying..."Don't you dare come closer!" Any comments welcome as usual.

Thanks, Mom. That thought actually crossed my mind. Every time I had gone to see her, (if no one was around) I talked to her and felt like she knew me. Maybe she WAS showing me her babies! I saw at least 4.

Karen, this a great photograph! You've caught the wonder of the new chicks and the attentiveness of their mom... well composed, perfect light, just right! Is this pretty much out of camera, or did you do your usual "crop 'til they bleed" on it? Whatever the story, you've got one for the frame here, in my opinion. Can't believe more people haven't commented on this shot!

Well, it is a big crop as there was a lot of messy nest and branches around I tried to avoid. I don't think I did much to it other than increase the saturation a bit. However, before I printed it, I reduced the brightness to get rid of the bright white on the mother's cheek, and ran it through NeatImage to make it pop more.

Thanks Allen and VI--appreciate the comments. I thought this shot had gotten swallowed by the forum before many saw it..and this is one I thought was pretty good.
