Anyone have experience with Mac software that allows incremental backups to DVDs?

I have Roxio, but seemingly once you write a set of files to the DVD, regardless of whether R or RW, no additional files can be added. Or am I'm just missing the how-to of adding files?

I back up my mac frequently and find it allot easier to backup to my external with FW 800 than with a DVD

Multi-session DVD burning is not supported under Mac OS X with Toast. You may want to take a look at BurnAgain DVD. Here is a link to the vendor site:

Many thanks for the link--and, not incidentally, the confirmation that "Multi-session DVD burning is not supported under Mac OS X with Toast." This is exactly what I was looking for.

It's a good idea to clone your entire system on to a bootable FW drive. There is a utility called carboncopycloner http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html (external link) which is free and duplicates your entire disk. On the dowside it does not do incrementals but is a fantastic backup soloution.

I read what you are asking for, however, why not buy a 500GB external hard drive? Most come with a backup software that has incremental capabilities. I used to do the DVD thing, but when it got to 15 discs, I changed to external hard drives because they are cheaper by the week.

Kharakim: DVDs are not an ideal way to backup data, they are instable and the dye layer that the data is written to decays over time, even if they are in a climate-controlled storage area. Recordable DVDs have a "shelf life" of less than 5 years, so I would recommend you get a system of multiple harddrives to backup to.

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.

Actually, I do have a WD 500 gig HD and, when using Lightroom, automatically back up my photo files to the HD. But it's always been my experience (after 27 years of personal computers) that hard drives are like motorcycle riders (which I also spent many years doing)--there are three kinds: those that have crashed, those that are currently crashing, and those that will crash sometime in the future.

So it's always been my policy to make two additional backup copies on "portable" magnetic media, although of course not infrequently I find one of them has failed and I need to replace it from the other or my HD.
