Yes, I am very new to photography. I think I have a good eye for seeing a shot but know little about manipulating my camera so that the shot is optimized. I am on here to learn first and foremost. So please, post my picture and tell me how to control my camera to better attain the desired result

Now I'm curious too..

Post up rclester.
Here is the original and my edit together. mertimmercrim, I don't think you did anything wrong in your camera settings. I really think you (or your camera, if you had it on a program mode) did a great job in gathering detail in both areas. This is what I want to point out to newer photographers (which I kind of thought you might be).....Don't be disappointed with your camera just because your pictures don't look exactly the way you thought they would straight out of the camera. You probably did everything you could do with just your camera. Almost every great photo you see in all of the photography magazines you probably look at has been edited to some extent. Most of them are not straight out of the camera. I used two programs for my edit, Photoshop CS5 and a plugin called Topaz Adjust. Don't worry about these programs just yet. Continue to learn your camera first. Just remember that some, of all of our photos, need some "tweaking". I'd almost bet that the sky in my edited version is a deeper blue than it actually was. Some will fault me for that. I could have made it lighter (more natural), but I like deep blue skies. There was something on the steps in the middle foreground that I just couldn't identify, so I removed it. I don't like the signs but they would have required a lot more time than I wanted to spend on it; so I left them. What I want to do is encourage you! You took a very nice photo...it just needed a little follow up work. If you take a photo in the future that looks "almost" like a "really good" photo, see if you can find a friend that does some photo editing to help you bring out the details. Keep up the good work and welcome to the forum!
And as for you, powerslave, I've long enjoyed your work here on this forum and on your website. I think you're just putting me on, and I don't think I'm going to teach you anything. You do some very nice work and I enjoy it very much!
