Thanks, impulse buy mainly because of awesome daylight long exposure shots like yours. I'm concerned that i won't be steady enough to hold the filter steady for long enough, was considering getting the conkin x-pro filter system basically for this lens, it would probably be at least a 200 dollar investment for the filters and the holder. Seems like a lot but I think that it will make all the difference in the long run. Do you find it difficult to hold the filter in front of the lens steady long enough to not hinder the IQ of the pics you are taking?

Thanks for all the insight! - Jim

By all means buy the best gear you can afford. The filter holder is nice, but I might suggest getting the Lee ultra-wide angle filter holder. I think the normal ones including the Cokin will show in the picture at 10mm. You have to buy the lee holder and a 77mm ultra wide angle adapter ring. You can get 2 filters on without it showing in the frame at 10mm.

I say it is possible to hand hold filters, but it is a bit of a pain to keep your hand out of the shot and you also scratch the surface a lot.

I now use the Lee filter holder, purchased from 2filters. Other retailers sell the same one without the Lee name on it but it costs much more for some reason. Call up 2filter.com and tell them you need a filter holder for your 10-22mm and need the UWA adapter. Even if not in stock, it is worth the wait.

From there, you can buy any 4x6 filters and drop them in I would start with a 3 stop hard and a 3 stop soft grad and then buy more as needed. I use those 2 99% of the time. Buy some cheap ones to practice with and buy some nicer Lee filters when you know what you like.

I wish I had a budget for that right now, getting married next year and the trip to Aruba is the honeymoon so extra money is at a minimum. I know the lee's are great but always in short supply and expensive. I usually shoot portraits and this is a departure to take my mind off of the norm. I think the conkin is the best bet for me because of the lower cost and the x-pro system is supposed to be wide enough that it doesn't interfere with the lens even at 10mm. I almost feel that to get the most out of this lens you need an ND filter set for daylight shoots. It should just come as a package deal. Lol.

Have you ever tried HDR? It works really well if you practice a little first. Exposure bracket mode of +- 2or3 stops, manual or auto mode, and burst mode. The camera goes through all 3 shots in high speed (when bracketing is on) and then stops instead of going on and wasting shots.

That would be the cheapest route to getting good landscapes where the exposure is balanced.

I don't know what your skill level is, but a standard copy of Photomatix (what I use) will produce most of the same results I get out of my 10-22.

Practice before traveling and you will know exactly how to make the best use of your shots.

Another awesome shot, Johan. You're certainly reaping a good number of great images from that shoreline. I'm envious. I'm so sick of the table flatness of my area. Very little to shoot.

Thanks. I am finding out that getting great shots is 100% location and timing. I don't get epic shots unless I go to epic locations. So, I focus more on less trips but to better locations.

I go laid off from my job lately, so expect a huge flood of shots in the next 4 months. One of my goals is to shoot the entire West Coast USA.

Damn! That's pretty epic and not a shot of the castle I have ever seen before.

I would personally match the tone of the reflection to the tone of the real tower, though. Not that I feel it would make it better, just personal preference. :D

From Pike Place Market in Seattle. I forgot how crowded it gets in there on the weekends!

Stunning pic, Johan. Is that sand to the right of the close rocks or mist or blurred waves tops? What did you use for lighting?
