Friends,

I had today a very swift outing to practice using the new lens. There was a very brief sunny window and I drove to Quito's Basílica to do these pictures. Using the 10mm range is certainly a challenge, as convergence of vertical lines is really strong if the camera is not pointed straight into the horizon, and the slightest rotation really unbalances the images. I had to rotate them a bit in LR.

Here are the photos:

I have linked the images to my site. The first picture has some history on the building which is Quito's Basilica del Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vow). Your comments and suggestions are more than welcome!

I'm really thrilled with the lens, and, as with fast lenses and the obsession of using the fastest aperture at first, I'm sure that once the 10mm fever washes a bit, the entire range of the lens will prove itself really useful and valuable! :) Today I shot mostly at 10mm instead of just walking further and trying more 'normal' focal ranges.

The hood and filter have arrived, so 'the circle is complete' :) . Every time I use the zoom ring, I'm thrilled with the feel to it! Much better than the 17-55 IMHO.

At any rate, the test was still too short and lots of way to learning this new lens.

Best regards,
Rafa.

Dug up a few from when I still had a 10-22. Very fun lens to shoot with!

Friends, I was today anxious to do some photographs and decided to try the 'macro' capabilities of this lens. Having such nice MFD, the lens can be about 2 inches away from any subject and the perspective is really interesting. It allows 'miniatures' to be photographed as if by a normal lens and giving them the appearance of being normal sized figures (and also provides interesting DoF because of the distance the lens can be placed from the main subject while still filling the frame.

Here's a wonderful chess set I recently inherited. Chess set 'Spaniards vs. Incas' made in Perú. This was the personal chess set of poet Jorgenrique Adoum:

I find this lens really versatile and its quality superb (and for this type of shot, great the fact that it does not changes length while zooming! :) ).

Best regards,
Rafa.

I took this at the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne: 10mm on 7D.

IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-1757.jpg

And this was a sunset over Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra, with five black swans making me some foreground interest: 13mm.

Some interesting-looking cacti in the US Botanic Gardens, in Washington D.C.: 10mm.

And then a bit further down the Mall to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History for this perspective on a mammoth skeleton: 10mm.

Thanks a lot Sirrith! The day was still a bit bright (though it was late afternoon) so I ended up using a home-made soft-box positioned only inches above the set, which allowed me to completely black out the environment and also those strong and large highlights on the marble. Oh, and about owning a chess set like that, yeah, I have wanted one for as long as I can remember as well, very happy to own one now :) .

Madweasel, great shots, I particularly love the sunset one... the swans on the lake are subtle yet provide an interesting 'story' to the picture! While the Mammoth shot is interesting, I'm left wishing for a more side-ways view that would allow me to see at least four legs :)

Thanks Rafa. With the mammoth I was trying to get an unusual perspective by being close to the tusks, so that they look as if they come out of the picture towards the viewer.
