Well IMO you're doing a great job. I too prefer the 'as seen with the naked eye' look and don't like HDR. You'll have to share your tips and tricks some day but keep the pics coming :)

^^thanks. I shoot everything tripod mounted, generally two exposures to get the highs and lows of the range of light, and then blend using layer masks in CS4.

Here is another, this one was harder, because of the location of the dark and light places that were naturally in the scene.

This one is actually one image, sometimes the range of the 50D surprises me. Of course, both were shot with my trusty 10-22!
