My favourite rum maybe a little hard to find for you. Bundaburg Rum (external link), or Bundy as it is commonly known.

The best I've had is BAcardi Watermelon... some real good stuff. Even though it probably isn't the best for shots, I find it's pretty damn good mixed..

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23-year-old. About $35-40, depending on how lucky you are.

Hands down, the best rum, in my opinion. Nothing else comes close (well, maybe Pyrat Cask 23 at 6 times the price). And the Zacapa is certainly the smoothest, even smoother than Pyrat Pistol (which is sickeningly sweet).

For general mixing, Appleton Estate V/X or Mount Gay Eclipse. Both very reasonable at about $16-18 a bottle. For specific mixing, you'd need to be specific....

So, to get to specifics, exactly what do you like in a rum? Sweet or dry? Complexity or simplicity? Smooth or not (if you're mixing, probably not). How about flavor? Do you want to taste molasses, or not? How about tasting any aging process (wood or oak or smoke or char)? Do you want decent, good, great, or unbelievable?

Do you want to sip, or mix? If mixing, what do you want to drink? Mojitos (Havana Club Anejo 3yr), caipirinhas (Fazenda Mae de Ouro), ti' punch (Neisson or La Favorite Blanc), rum & coke (Appleton V/X or Eclipse), tiki drinks (there's a whole list), something else? Or do you wish the taste of the rum to disappear (Prichard's Crystal)?

If you sip, what tastes do you like? Smoke/char, oak, vanilla, bananas, dark fruit, light fruit, what what what?

Some short lists of rums to start you off - though most tend to be sipping rums:

I always liked a spirit called Cane Spirit, kind of a white rum made of sugar cane. Usually served with Coke as a mixer - that was called 'spook and diesel' in the slang we used. You could dilute the cane to taste so very popular with new drinkers.

But be careful with spirits, it is very easy to drink faster than you can absorb the alchohol and suddenly end up mega drunk. drowning in your own vomit is quite easy to do, and no one will give you the kiss of life...;)

Personally I prefer beer.

Seriously, is jack even in the same league as the Bourbon from Kentucky? Knob Creek is great. It is my favorite if I am not home in ky.

Spent some time in Barbados a few years ago. Two brands are made there; Cockspur and Mount Gay.

One nice afternoon, I sat at the bar and asked the bartender what the difference was - he set up a taste test for the two for my wife and I.

Cockspur is good, but perhaps has a bit more "edge"; Mount Gay was the winner. My wife and I only allow Mount Gay in our house.

Bacardi might do in a pinch - after a few drinks.;)

We've all been talking about the basic ingredient, but not about mixing it.

Our favourite:

Fill tall glass with crushed ice (if possible, but cubes are OK too)
1 1/2 oz rum (always Mount Gay - don't let the name put you off)
juice of 1/4 sweet lime (make sure it's a sweet lime, not the regular kind -sweet limes can be eaten like an orange, and are more yellow than green)
top up with ginger ale, or if you don't like sweet, use soda water.

Only one thing I don't like about this drink - it goes down too fast.:D

So what's recommended as a starter rum, that's smooth for shots, and decently tasty?

My parents brought some back from Cuba, I think it was Havana Club and it was pretty good.

I much prefer whisky, Laphroaig in particular, it's the absolute best drink i've ever had :)
