thm files on the rebel

is there a way to get rid of them...i need all the memory i can get and just don't see what the point of them is...windows doesn't automatically recognize them (why i don't know)

Sure, just erase/delete them from your PC. They are essentially a JPG file with the extension changed to THM. They also contain the complete EXIF data so you can lose a bit of this information by deleting them that will likely only marginally, if at all, affect your image editing unless you use applications that use this data.

Since the THM files are quite small, they should not really be a memory (HD storage) issue. They are only about 10k each in size, which compared to the 7MB RAW file size is quite insignificant. To put the memory issue into perspective, a 1GB CF holds around 130 RAW images @+- 7MB/image along with the associated THM files. This means about 910MB of storage is RAW images and 1.3MB is THM....not really a big storage deal if you look at it in these terms.
