is there a way to get rid of them...i need all the memory i can get and just don't see what the point of them is...windows doesn't automatically recognize them (why i don't know)

They are essentially a JPG file with the extension changed to THM. They also contain the complete EXIF data so you can lose a bit of this information by deleting them that will likely only marginally, if at all, affect your image editing unless you use applications that use this data.
